Okage Yokocho in Ise (Mie): Opening Hours, the 1st-of-the-Month Morning Market and Avoiding the Crowds

After praying at the Naiku (Inner Shrine) of Ise Jingu, almost everyone walks into Oharai-machi, the old street of shops and restaurants in front of the shrine, and Okage Yokocho in the middle of it. It is a lovely place to eat and shop, but it closes earlier than many visitors expect, it gets very crowded on holidays, and on the 1st of every month it opens before dawn. This guide covers the hours, the early-morning tradition and how to avoid the worst of the traffic, based on Okage Yokocho's and Ise City (Mie)'s own pages (checked October 2026).

What and where
Okage Yokocho is about a 5-minute walk from Uji Bridge, the entrance to the Naiku, in the middle of Oharai-machi. Look for the large stone lantern at the entrance. It is a single "town" of more than 50 shops, with no walls or gates, so you can wander freely. The name comes from "okage-mairi," the pilgrimages of the Edo period, when, as Okage Yokocho tells it, several million people flooded into Ise (Mie) in just 50 days and were welcomed by the townspeople.
Opening hours: it closes early
Okage Yokocho's hours are from 9:30 to between 17:00 and 18:00, depending on the month. Plan your Naiku visit so that you reach the street with time to spare.
The 1st of the month: a morning market before dawn
Ise (Mie) has an old custom called tsuitachi-mairi: on the 1st of each month, people get up early and visit the shrine to give thanks for the month that has passed and pray for the one ahead. To welcome these early visitors, Okage Yokocho holds a morning market from 4:30, and its shops open from 4:45, several serving a special morning rice porridge, according to its page on the 1st-of-the-month market.
The famous sweet shop Akafuku sells a different tsuitachi-mochi each month, on the 1st only (not in January), and it must be eaten the same day. According to Akafuku's page, to buy at the main shop without a reservation you collect a numbered, timed ticket in front of the shop from 17:00 the day before; sales start at 4:45. Even with a ticket, you can't buy once it sells out. Reservations for collection at a separate pick-up site open on the 10th of the previous month.
Hungry for lunch instead? Okage Yokocho notes that the tekone-zushi (marinated bonito on rice) at its Sushikyu restaurant has been recognized as a "100-Year Food" by Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs. Crowds, closed roads and park-and-ride
- Oharai-machi is closed to cars on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 10:00 to 16:00 (bicycles excepted), according to the traffic map of Rakuraku Isemode, Ise City (Mie)'s traffic information site. Walk on the street with care when it reopens to cars.
- Traffic peaks just after noon. The city's FAQ says roads around the Naiku can be jammed from a little after 9:00 until about 17:00 on busy days, and on the way home too. It asks visitors to use public transport during New Year, Golden Week and long weekends.
- Park-and-ride: on the busiest days, such as New Year and Golden Week, the city runs park-and-ride from temporary parking near the Mie Sun Arena: 1,000 yen per car, with a free shuttle bus to the Naiku or Geku area in about 15 to 25 minutes on dedicated bus lanes. On those days, some expressway exits near the shrine are closed.
Quick checklist
- Visit the Naiku in the morning, then reach Okage Yokocho well before 17:00.
- Here on the 1st of a month? Come at dawn for the market, and get Akafuku's ticket the evening before.
- Coming on a holiday? Take the train and bus, or use park-and-ride.
