Universal Studios Japan Express Pass: Is It Worth It, How It Works and How to Buy

Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in Osaka is one of the most popular days out in Japan, and the lines show it. The Universal Express Pass lets you use shorter lanes at the attractions printed on your pass, and some versions also guarantee entry to SUPER NINTENDO WORLD. It costs extra and can't be canceled, so it's worth understanding before you pay. This guide explains how the pass works using USJ's official rules, who it is worth it for, and where to buy it safely.
A theme park day takes planning, especially if it's the one day of your trip that the whole family is looking forward to. A few minutes with the rules below can save hours in line.

- The Express Pass is an add-on: you still need a park ticket (Studio Pass) for the same day
- Each pass covers only the attractions printed on it, and some have a fixed time
- Some Express Passes include guaranteed entry to SUPER NINTENDO WORLD
- Once bought, it can't be canceled, and each pass is for one person only
- Prices and the passes on sale change by date; buy from USJ or a travel agency USJ lists
What the Express Pass is
USJ's official Express Pass page describes it as a ticket that reduces waiting times at popular attractions through special Express Pass lanes, which are shorter than regular lines. The key points:
- It doesn't get you into the park. You need a Studio Pass (park entry ticket), such as a 1 Day Studio Pass, for the same date.
- It's valid only on the date printed on it.
- It covers only the attractions printed on it. Where a pass lists several attractions as a choice, you can use only one of them.
- Some attractions are time-designated. Go at the time printed on your ticket. Others can be used any time during opening hours.
- Types and prices change by day. USJ says the passes on sale and their prices vary depending on the date, and can change without notice.
SUPER NINTENDO WORLD and Area Timed Entry Tickets
On busy days you may need a timed ticket just to enter some areas, including SUPER NINTENDO WORLD. USJ's Timed Entry eTickets page says there are two ways to get one:
- In advance, with certain Universal Express Passes or through select travel agencies.
- On the day, through USJ's official app after you enter the park. When the timed tickets run out, the app may issue Standby Entry Tickets, and USJ can stop issuing tickets without notice depending on crowds.
So if SUPER NINTENDO WORLD is the main reason for your visit, an Express Pass that includes guaranteed area entry removes the biggest uncertainty of the day. Even inside the area, USJ notes that an attraction can be suspended or finish early. Download the official app before you go either way.
Is the Express Pass worth it?
It depends on how many days you have and how much one line would cost you. Use this as a quick check:
A practical way to decide: look up your date on the official store or a booking page, since the passes on sale and their prices change by day, and see which attractions each pass lists. If you have only one day, want SUPER NINTENDO WORLD for sure and are visiting on a weekend or holiday, the pass is most likely to pay off in time saved.
Rules that catch people out
Read these before you pay. All of them come from USJ's official FAQ and notices.
- No cancellation. Once purchased, an Express Pass can't be canceled.
- One person, one pass. Each pass is valid only for its purchaser and can't be shared with a companion.
- Be on time. If you are late for a timed attraction, you can't switch to another time and you won't get a refund.
- Height and health rules still apply. Even with a pass, you can't ride an attraction if you don't meet its height requirement. Check the requirements for every attraction on the pass first, especially with young children. USJ also asks pregnant guests not to use certain attractions.
- Closures happen. Attractions may stop and shows may be canceled. If an attraction you selected isn't running, USJ asks you to enjoy the other attractions on the pass (not including time-designated ones).
- Keep the whole screen. Print or save the entire ticket screen with the QR code and show all of it, not just the code. An altered ticket can't be used.
- Never buy resale tickets. USJ strictly prohibits resale, and tickets bought from resellers through ticket agency or auction sites are not accepted.
Decided to skip the Express Pass? You still need a park ticket, and a ticket bought in advance lets you enter directly, with no exchange at the park. Klook sells the USJ Studio Pass (affiliate link), including a package with SUPER NINTENDO WORLD entry (checked October 17, 2026).
How to buy safely
USJ's "How to Buy" section lists two ways to buy in advance: its Official Web Ticket Store, and travel agencies on its official travel agency list, which on the day we checked showed Klook, Trip.com, JTB, HIS, traveloka and tiket.com. Tickets bought in advance let you enter the park directly, with no exchange. If you stay at one of USJ's partner hotels, USJ says you can also buy tickets there on your check-in day and the next day. The tickets on sale differ from seller to seller, so compare the attractions listed, not just the name.
The JR station for the park is Universal City Station, on the JR Yumesaki Line. For more of Osaka, see our guides to where to stay in Osaka and Osaka's citywide street-smoking ban. Still choosing your travel dates? Our month-by-month guide shows Japan's busy holiday periods.
Ready to plan your day? Check the height rules, pick the attractions that matter most to your group, then compare the Express Pass types on Klook (affiliate link) for your date. With the long lines handled, you can spend the day enjoying the park instead of waiting in it.
