Kamikochi (Nagano) Trail Manners: Trash, Wildlife, Bears and Staying on the Path

Kamikochi (Nagano) feels like a gentle riverside walk, with boardwalks, wide trails and snow-capped peaks. But it is a strictly protected part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park, and the valley is also core habitat for Asian black bears. The local rules are short and easy to follow. This guide lists the official "5 rules" of Kamikochi (Nagano), why there are almost no trash cans, and what the Ministry of the Environment asks hikers to do about monkeys and bears (checked October 2026).

The Kamikochi (Nagano) rules
The official Kamikochi (Nagano) website sums up its rules as "5 rules, plus 2." It also reminds visitors that the area is protected by law and that collecting plants or wildlife is illegal.
A few more points from the same page: camping and fires are allowed only in designated areas, please don't throw stones into the water, and water is scarce above the tree line, so use it sparingly.
Trash: there are almost no bins
The site's FAQ says there are virtually no trash cans in Kamikochi (Nagano). Take your trash back to the shop where you bought the item, or carry it home. That includes leftover food and cigarette butts. Food scraps matter here because they teach animals to look for human food, which leads to the problems below. A small bag for your own trash is the easiest fix.
Monkeys and ducks: please don't feed them
Japanese macaques live in the valley all year and are not very shy. The official site explains that monkeys that learn the taste of human food start stealing bags, breaking into cars and raiding shops, as has happened in other areas, so feeding is strictly prohibited. Keep your distance, keep food packed away, and let them pass.
Bears: what to carry and what to do
Kamikochi (Nagano) is in the heart of Asian black bear habitat. The Ministry of the Environment's bear manual for the area asks visitors to help by doing the following, and the local information center collects every sighting and posts the risk level for visitors.
- Wear a bear bell if needed, so a bear knows you are coming. The Ministry encourages bells because one cause of injuries is a person and a bear meeting at close range without noticing each other.
- Keep food and trash under control. A bear that eats human food once can become fixated on it. The Ministry's goal is zero bears that learn to eat human food.
- If you see a bear, stay calm and keep your distance on your own. Don't walk closer to watch or take photos, shout, try to chase it away, or run.
- Report the sighting to the Kamikochi (Nagano) Information Center (0263-95-2433). After problem sightings, trails can be closed or night walking restricted, so follow any notices you see.
Carrying bear spray? The bus company does not allow it in the bus cabin; see getting to Kamikochi (Nagano) by bus or taxi.
